Nose surgery is one of the most sought after medical procedures in the world. More than 900,000 operations are performed yearly. The International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery lists Israel, South Korea, and Turkey among the most popular destinations for rhinoplasty. 72,1% of all patients are female, and only 27,9% are male.
People seek rhinoplasty for different reasons, mostly aesthetic. Dissatisfaction with the size or shape of the nose, humps, tip shape or nostrils span are some of the main reasons. Some seek reconstruction after trauma or an accident. Others undergo rhinoplasty to fix breathing issues.
In preparation for the procedure, the surgeon thoroughly examines the patient and discusses the desired result. The invasiveness of the operation depends on the area of the nose. The less drastic the changes, the quicker and less complicated the process. Nose jobs are performed with the purpose of:
Some doctors use 3D imaging to help their patients visualize the outcome. This procedure involves recreating a 3D image of the person on a computer and modeling the estimate of the desired nose shape. Some find this kind of “before/after” prediction helpful during the decision process.
Clear communication between the doctor and the patient is crucial, as it helps to find the common ground between what is sought and what is achievable. The surgeon can provide many pictures of their previous work to demonstrate what kind of a result can be expected. It usually takes several meetings between the first diagnostic and the surgery itself to create the trust bond. If needed, remote consultations can be arranged as well.
Sometimes, the patient undergoes a consultation with a psychologist. It involves talking about the psychological aspects of the appearance change and implications of that.
Some basic examinations like blood tests and ECG/EEG are required.
Usually, rhinoplasty is performed on an outpatient basis. General sedation and local anesthesia are used.
Rhinoplasty is conducted by a single surgeon with the help of an assistant. The operation takes on average from 90 to 180 minutes.
The exact procedure will depend on the area of the nose that is being operated and the goal. In general, there are three types of rhinoplasty operations:
Good for minor changes. Instead of cutting away, the surgeon adds some in strategic spots, balancing out face shape and creating symmetry. This is usually achieved with the help of hyaluronic acid injections. This is the least invasive method, as well as the quickest (5-15 minutes), with the least risks and shorter recovery time. Yet, the effects can be just as impressive. As a result, hooked noses can look straighter, and wide noses — thinner. The filler remains for about 2 years, after that the procedure is should be repeated.
Performed through incisions from within the patient’s nostrils. Because of that, there are no visible scars. This kind of operation is preferable for nasal bridge modifications. It won’t be helpful in fixing significant deformations or achieving dramatic nose change.
Performed through small cuts between nostrils, where the nasal skin is lifted. This kind of operation allows for bigger space for manipulation and more ambitious changes. In the end, a small scar on the nose tip might remain. It can be hidden or minimized within several months with a scar revision surgery.
The outcome of the operation depends on many factors, including the patient’s age, skin condition, size of their nose, etc. On some occasions, additional surgery with small adjustments might be necessary.
The result you see right after the bandages come off is not final. For example, after the nose tip reshaping, 60% of the changes will be visible within three weeks. It will take for up to a year for the final shape of the nose to set in, sometimes more.
After the operation, the patient might need to spend 1-2 days at the hospital. Their nose will have to be supported by a pad underneath it for 12 hours, and a splint tape for around a week.
Some post-operation swelling is inevitable. However, patients in foreign hospitals get the best care to cope with the recovery process. Other aftereffects include difficulties with breathing, minor bleeding and altered sense of smell. This is not alarming and usually passes with time.
For the first 1-2 weeks following the operation, full rest is recommended. You should avoid putting any pressure on the nose (e.g. while sleeping). Direct sunlight can lead to quick sunburning, so usage of a strong sunblock with both UVA and UVB protection is strongly recommended. In 3-5 days, you should be able to go on walks, and in about 3 weeks — to go swimming. Avoid demanding physical exercise for 4-6 weeks.
More detailed recommendations for proper aftercare and recovery will be provided by the attending physician.
