Liver transplantation in Turkey is carried out exclusively from relatives of donor (not younger than 18 years), up to the 4th generation. Spouses are also considered relatives.
Before the procedure, patient must provide the documents that confirm his relationship with the donor - a birth certificate / marriage certificate, passport. Patients who are married need to take the notarized consent of the spouse for a liver transplant surgery in the clinic.
Liver has a unique ability to regenerate. In 3-6 months after transplantation, the donor liver reaches 85% of the initial mass, and within a year it is fully restored.
For transplantation most often the left lobe of the donor liver is used. During surgery, the affected liver of the patient is removed and replaced with part of a healthy donor organ. An adult patient is transplanted half of the liver, and for children up to 15 kg - the fourth part. The donor needs to be in the clinic for at least a week, for a patient with a new liver - at least 30 days stay is required.
