Diagnosis of glioblastoma in Turkey

MRI spectroscopy: This type of scan gives the doctor the chemical profile of the tumor. Certain chemicals are produced by the normal brain cells and the glioblastoma cells. Treatment strategies for glioblastoma in Turkish Clinics

Surgery

The main purpose of the surgery is to remove as much glioblastoma as possible for this purpose different surgical interventions are used which include: Craniotomy: During a craniotomy, surgeons open up the patient's skull to access the region of the brain where the tumor is localized. They use intraoperative imaging & neuronavigation as glioblastoma grows into the healthy tissues as well. This makes the surgery risky but using image-guided techniques makes the procedure safe and accurate. Once the surgery is complete the patient undergoes sessions of chemo, radiotherapy, or radiosurgery to kill any of the remaining glioblastoma cells. Surgery for glioblastoma is also performed in Turkey by two other methods:
  1. Endoscopic surgery (procedure in which a tiny incision is made in the skull and the endoscope along with surgical tools is inserted. The whole procedure is controlled through the endoscopic stand)
  2. Robot-assisted surgery ( during the surgical robotic arms are used to remove the glioblastoma through a tiny incision in the skull. The surgeon controls the robot using a console).

Chemotherapy

Chemo is used to kill the glioblastoma cells that couldn’t be removed. In certain cases during the surgery, a thin wafer that contains the chemo drugs is placed in the patient’s brain. The drug dissolves slowly and kills the cancer cells. The intravenous route is also used to deliver the chemo drugs if cancer recurs.

Tumor treating field therapy

In this therapy adhesive patches are attached to the patient's scalp to deliver electric current. This helps in damaging the glioblastoma cells by stopping their growth
