Features of the Clinic
TREATMENT OF CANCER IN SPANISH CLINIC THE UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL OF NAVARRA
The Navarra Cancer Center has achieved outstanding success in the treatment of breast cancer. Leading Spanish doctors at the hospital managed to cure breast cancer in more than 4000 patients.
The oncological center of the clinic is characterized by quick diagnosis of the patient and the speed of establishing an accurate diagnosis.
Within 24 hours the patient undergoes all necessary research. And less than 72 hours later - gets an effective treatment regimen.
To confirm the diagnosis or if there is a suspicion of breast cancer, patients are assigned to carry out magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
This method of diagnosis is the most safe for healthy tissues and organs of the patient, since it is carried out without X-rays, in contrast to mammography.
It also allows to accurately determine the size of the tumor, its location and speed of development.
MRI studies use contrast (gadolinium - hypoallergenic coloring substance), which is used to detect the smallest changes in the tumor, as it makes it possible to visualize the vasculature of the mammary gland. Examination without contrast is performed to determine tissue density and study the structure of the mammary glands. Annually more than 10 000 diagnostic procedures are performed at the Cancer Center of the Navarra Hospital.
For the treatment of breast cancer here is assigned:
- Surgical removal of malignant formation (with subsequent reconstruction of the breast);
- Treatment of radiation therapy (with the help of advanced linear accelerators, which minimize the effect of irradiation on healthy tissues and organs of the patient);
- Chemotherapy (with innovative drugs and maintenance therapy, which helps to better cope with side effects);
- Treatment with immunotherapy (which hinders the growth and further development of cancer cells).
TREATMENT OF OSTEOSARCOMA IN THE CLINIC OF NAVARRA IN SPAIN
In the Navarra hospital, an effective treatment of osteosarcoma is performed - a malignant bone tumor.
For an accurate diagnosis of this disease, specialists of Navarra use:
- Scintigraphy of the bones (osteo scintigraphy) is a study of the metabolism of bone tissue with the help of radiopharmaceuticals (RFPs) that accumulate in the bones of the skeleton. The procedure allows to reveal pathologies in the bones at the initial stage - before the appearance of clinical and radiological signs.
- Radiography, which allows to detect lesions of bone tissue, false joints or pathological fractures.
- CT and MRI diagnostics - a comprehensive examination of the patient with the help of advanced tomographs makes it possible to determine the exact location of the tumor, its shape, size, speed of development and the degree of damage to healthy tissues and organs.
Laboratory methods for diagnosing osteosarcoma include: a general clinical analysis of blood and urine, a biochemical blood test, a proteinogram, an immunohistochemical test.
For the treatment of bone cancer, leading Spanish specialists perform a preoperative chemotherapy course that reduces the size of the tumor and prevents the appearance of metastasis in healthy tissues and organs. To do this, use special cytotoxic drugs that stop the development and spread of cancer cells.
Surgery of malignant neoplasm is focused on organ-preserving operations. In the case of severe oncological disease, spread of osteosarcoma and lack of timely treatment, surgeons resort to removal of the affected area and subsequently carry out prosthetics with a metal implant.
After the operation, a course of postoperative chemotherapy and radiation therapy is conducted at the Navarra Clinic. They can destroy the remaining cancer cells, prevent the occurrence of metastases and prevent relapses.
NEUROSURGERY DEPARTMENT OF THE UNIVERSITY CLINIC NAVARRA IN SPAIN
Diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic diseases of the central and peripheral nervous system, as well as diseases of the brain and spinal cord are handled in the hospital Navarra.
For the harmless and successful removal of the brain tumor, clinic specialists use a fluorescent microscope. It allows clear identification of the malignant neoplasm and completely remove it in 83% of patients.
In 2009, in the neurosurgical department of Navarra for the first time in the country started treatment of the most aggressive brain tumor (glioblastoma multiforme) with personalized cellular vaccines.
To treat Parkinson's disease, deep brain stimulation is carried out here.
Deep brain stimulation is a method of treatment that aims to suppress the activity of the brain areas responsible for the symptoms of the disease. The procedure involves surgical implantation of special electrodes in certain areas of the brain. These electrodes produce electrical impulses that regulate brain function impairments, affect certain cells and chemicals in it.
Electrodes keep working capacity in the body from 3 to 5 years. Then they are easily replaced with new ones.
Deep brain stimulation is effective for all the main symptoms of Parkinson's disease - such as tremors, slowed movements, stiffness of muscles, and - problems with walking and balance keeping.
In more than 70% of patients with Parkinson's disease there is a significant reduction in symptoms after the procedure and a reduction in the dose of drugs.
BARIATRIC SURGERY DEPARTMENT IN THE UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL OF NAVARRA
The hospital specialists help to get rid of excess weight of patients with the help of innovative methods that meet the international standards of quality and safety in the field of medicine.
The Center for Bariatric Surgery Navarra is certified by the European Society for the Study of Obesity and the International Federation of Bariatric Surgery.
To diagnose patients in the clinic, an advanced Bod-Pod technology and special calorie expenditure estimates are used. Bod-Pod allows you to determine the percentage of body fat of the patient and % of weight without fat (bones, muscles, internal organs and water).
This method is considered the "gold standard" for measuring body fat. The test is of great diagnostic value, because the concept of obesity refers to the excess fat content in the patient's body, not its weight.
After diagnosis, doctors select the appropriate treatment program:
- program # 1 - for patients without complications;
- program number 2 - for patients with cardiovascular risk factors;
- program # 3 - for patients with concomitant complications;
- program number 4 - complex, for patients with signs of bariatric or metabolic surgery.
